Words - Mancave London/Alex Strohl

Alex Strohl is a Madrid born, French photographer whose explorations around the world have transformed the world of adventure photography. Travelling from national park to mountain peak, lakeside to seascape cliffs, he strives to create a never-ending reel of memories. Vast landscapes, water, man made structures against Mother Nature, light. Alex is always trying to capture the moments in between these majestic landscapes; the moments that aren’t as obvious as the view he originally set out to find.
We find ourselves, completely captivated by Alex’s work. Wherever his next adventure is, we want to go with him and that is why he is Mancave London’s Photographer of the Month. With an impressive clientele including Apple, Canon, Land Rover & Moncler and his work featured in Forbes and Vanity Fair we are honored to have chatted with him about his work, what inspires him as a photographer and where is next on his map to visit.
How long have you been taking photographs?
Since my late teens. Our family lived deep in the forests of south France and as a result I spent a lot of time exploring the surrounding roads on my dirt bike, always with a camera.
What's been your most memorable project?
Probably our most recent trip through Europe. Just the length and how immersed we became in the various cultures was a life changing experience. The trip became the subject of my upcoming book ‘Alternative Living’ and that project grew in such an incredible way, really informing what has become an ongoing project.

Most interesting location shoot?
The Lofoten Islands, with its dramatic, varied and desolate landscape I was constantly inspired. Seeing how the people live in such a tumultuous and extreme environment, the interplay between such unique topography jutting directly from the ocean, it was a place unlike any other we’ve seen and we really fell in love.
What inspires you as a photographer?
The relationship between people and nature, observing how people interact with their surroundings. Being able to see how individuals and groups become so accustomed and in tune with their environment, I love the challenge of trying to express that through my work.
Who is your favourite photographer?
There is a lot of great work out there, my favourites at the moment are:

Top place to eat/drink?
Paris... or maybe even just a small french village, there is something special about the passion France has for good food. It’s no coincidence that many of the best chefs in the world come to perfect their craft. Ratatouille is my favorite, maybe with a nice glass of Bordeaux.
Page you most visit on instagram?
I spend most of my time viewing the accounts that inspire me, it is difficult to single a feed out. One of the best things about Instagram is that you can be inspired by similar artists as well as motivated by photographers with different styles, I really enjoy that.
What’s your ideal Sunday?
Waking up late, definitely in a tent somewhere. Making breakfast with friends over a campfire, on a crisp morning with a fresh snowfall. Then an adventure somewhere in the mountains, somewhere with natural hot springs at the end. That would be a great day.. sounds like a good plan for next Sunday actually.

Favourite camera to play with?
A Bronica RF-645, it's a really small medium-format film camera which still allows for great quality. Film is such a different experience, I love the storytelling component of not being able to review images.
Next place on your map to visit?
South Georgia and the Sandwich Islands, off the southeast coast of Argentina is the most southerly inhabitation on earth outside of Antarctica. It would be incredible to visit such an isolated and unforgiving location, the islands are covered by glaciers except near the shore, I cant think of a beach I am more desperate to walk down.
